"I was very ambitious at 16 and the Travis Perkins scheme sounded right up my street. I'd already left school and was working as an office junior on a youth training scheme when a friend persuaded me to write to Travis Perkins. I did and got accepted.

"I've worked for Travis Perkins all my life and it's put me on a great career path. I like the company and the people. My job fulfils all my needs and more.

"Personality and character are important qualities in management. I've known people who were more intelligent and qualified than me but who weren't right for the company. You have to be a strong, bold character, not pushy or loud. You have to accept you're going to get a few knock backs and not be scared. I was probably very average on the trainee scheme but I adapted to life at the sharp end and what people needed in branch on the operations side of the business.

"If you work hard you'll be successful because there are lots of opportunities with Travis Perkins. Managing people is one of the hardest things but it's also very rewarding. It takes a special person."
