Opportunity can come in the most extraordinary of circumstances. Nathanael Pearce thought he'd blown it when he didn't get into the university of his choice.

He needed to reassess his career and ironically, during a break from education, found exactly what he was looking for.

Rather than just sitting around waiting to re-apply to college, Nathanael took a couple of jobs to gain work experience. He enjoyed it, especially earning some hard cash, but felt he was going nowhere. Then he discovered the Travis Perkins Training Scheme and leapt at the opportunity. That lucky break saved him three years of university fees and loans. He says, 'I was immediately earning money and starting a career.'

The beauty of the scheme is the variety of different jobs and learning that came his way. There was never a chance to get bored. He says, 'I did five modules in different branches and we learnt a different thing every couple of months, so I got a feel for every single part of the business. You do everything.'

Nathanael's now an assistant manager in Keyline, and looking forward to moving up the company. He can't believe his luck.
